Does This Volvo Make My Butt Look Big?

literateladies-1037I am thrilled to announce that my new book Does This Volvo Make My Butt Look Big? is officially out today.

This book is a collection of essays for moms (and other tired people) about the mundane, beautiful and occasionally hilarious moments of parenting.

Moms can sometimes feel like support staff, but we are just there for support in the same way the foundation of a sky scraper is just there for support. Or how the earth is just there to support human life. It’s kind of a big deal to be a mom.

This book is based on a column that I’ve been writing for five years. I’ve gotten a lot of response to the column, but the thing that’s surprised me the most is the phrases “Me too!” and “I’ve always thought that.” It turns out my crazy inner dialog isn’t unique to me, which is a bit of a relief.

I’ve found that no matter what our circumstances – whether we work or stay home or both, whether we have boys or girls or both, whether our kids have special needs or not, there is more to motherhood that is universal than not. We all have to go to the parent / teacher conference, we’re all going to flush a goldfish or two, and at some point all of our teenagers are going to act like idiots. Even the best ones, 100% guaranteed.

The book is hardcover and pretty, with beautiful photographs by Jill DiMassimo. To be honest, the foreword by Lee Woodruff is worth the price of admission. I think it makes a great gift for your sister-in-law, your mom, your BFF and your holiday party hostess. (Also your kid’s teacher, your manicurist, the crossing guard, your boss, your neighbor who never runs out of sugar and lets you cry in her driveway…Really, anyone.)

Here are some nice things that famous people have said:

“Annabel Monaghan is wry and humorous, truthful and self-deprecating. Her writing combines the brilliance of Nora Ephron’s wit and Erma Bombeck’s madcap housewifery, with a dash of Liz Gilbert’s heartfelt girlfriend truth.”

“Reading Annabel Monaghan’s Does This Volvo Make My Butt Look Big? is like spending the days with a funny, affable, generous friend who gets all the absurdity in your everyday life. This charming and smart book is a must read for anyone who’s ever spent way too much of their important brain power sorting other people’s socks.”

“Annabel Monaghan not only makes us laugh and cry with recognition, she wakes us up. These incredibly insightful essays shine a light on the craziness that is modern motherhood and by peeling away all pretense, she gives us a great gift.”

Giving Away the Old Books (and grabbing half of them back!)

As Published in The Rye Record on April 17, 2015 I admit that I’m unusually attached to paper. Words on paper, to be specific. I save select cards, notes and love letters in a box that I’ve been carting from state to state for nearly thirty years. Those letters have an energy to them, the visual… Continue Reading
